James O'Dea: How To Create Enemies

 The Spiritual Response:
Serve All Beings Without Distinction

Arthur Koestler once said: “The egotism (and dangerous nationalism) of the group feeds off the altruism of its members.” The idea is that nationalist and authoritarian leaders turn devotion to specific family and community values into an attack on others or blaming/scapegoating others for deficiencies. This is so important to understand how good people are betrayed into creating enemies where they don’t exist. When people think they are being called by ideals they only interpret other calls as lies, manipulation and fake. To create enemies you do your best to serve your group and exclude others. So it is devotion to a limited group that creates enemies reaping hell out of what is essentially good.. The spiritual response: serve all beings without distinction.
