These are glimpses from our first visit last night to the ICE building in Portland. I’d protested there years ago, but today it is very different. A wonderful, colorful, peaceful, and vibrant little gathering.
Initially there were some right wing agitators down the block with a loud megaphone who “love Trump” and were trying to call out those who “hate America.” But they left before long and must have gotten bored with no one responding.
At one point when the ICE officers came out of the building to hold a line for exiting vehicles, I stood silently in front of them. I watched some reading my sign. And I flipped my sign so that they could see both sides. I tried to engage in eye contact, but they avoided that. So I just stood there in peaceful silence.
I also really appreciate the sign that my husband was moved to make. Ron normally doesn’t carry a sign, but last night he did.
I’m so glad that we went. And Ron and I will next be joining the millions nationwide who will be rallying for the huge No Kings protests on the 18th. And we’ll be continuing to show up at the ICE building and standing in solidarity against the crimes and cruelty of these times and for the well-being and highest good of us all.
May we all be inspired to do our part! Resistance is indeed our civic duty and we truly are all in this together. And may we remember that our greatest strength lies in the gentleness and tenderness of our hearts.✌💜🙏 Molly
