I have not identified as a democrat ever since I came to understand that the Clintons, Obama, Biden, and most democrats in positions of power are neoliberals who’ve sold their souls to the best interests of their corporate donors rather than We the People and the planet.
That said, bringing 1984 to life today by the fascists in this republican administration horrifies me more than I’ve ever been before. Pure madness!
And my brigadier general grandfather — a lifelong republican who taught Eisenhower at West Point, served in both World Wars, and who we buried at West Point on his 99th birthday — would also be beyond horrified seeing the fascism he fought against take root in the White House and the whole of the current administration in power. Such chilling and heartbreaking times!! — Molly
This quote is from Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949), a novel depicting totalitarian control of thought and reality, making the line a central motif referenced in contemporary discussions of propaganda and denial of fact.
This line appears in Orwell’s novel as a reflection on the Party’s demand for total control over reality, insisting that citizens ignore their own perceptions and believe only the official version of truth. The passage continues, “His heart sank as he thought of the enormous power arrayed against him, the ease with which any Party intellectual would overthrow him in debate... And yet he was in the right! They were wrong and he was right. The obvious, the silly and the true had got to be defended. Truisms are true, hold on to that! The solid world exists, its laws do not change. Stones are hard, water is wet, objects unsupported fall towards the earth’s center.”
