We humans have spent a lot of time remaking the world to meet our needs, racking up life-giving breakthroughs AND making deadly mistakes. But we've often failed to undergo the makeovers that would make us better stewards of the world. The Greeks called it hubris—and it can do us in.
In a season when many religious and secular traditions remind us of the importance of OUR transformation, here's a Memo to Myself: Try a little humility, attend more closely to the needs of the world, and remember Rilke's words, "You must change your life!"
