Paul K. Chappell: Replacing the Paradigm of War With One of Waging Peace

I'm sitting here weeping. I just discovered someone new who is just touching my heart with his courage and compassion and his wise heart. Like my paternal grandfather, Frederick Smith Strong, Jr., Paul Chappell is a West Point graduate who went on to be engaged in foreign wars. He also learned sacred lessons through his experiences in Iraq. Deep bow of gratitude to Paul K. Chappell. May we all be drawn to those who break our hearts wide open and help us to remember what we have forgotten. The path to peace is peace. May we all strive to increasingly embody that peace. — Molly

When people in a democracy are not educated in the art of living -- to strengthen their conscience, compassion, and ability to question and think critically -- they can be easily manipulated by fear and propaganda. A democracy is only as wise as its citizens, and a democracy of ignorant citizens can be as dangerous as a dictatorship.

The majority of human conflict comes from people just feeling disrespected.

In order for humanity to survive in the twenty-first century and beyond, we must nurture rather than repress children's natural curiosity. We must encourage them to be curious, instead of fearful, toward other cultures.

To replace the old paradigm of war with a new paradigm of waging peace, we must be pioneers who can push the boundaries of human understanding. We must be doctors who can cure the virus of violence. We must be soldiers of peace who can do more than preach to the choir. And we must be artists who will make the world our masterpiece.

The right tools for solving disputes within our community are precision instruments such as reason, communication, empathy, curiosity, and understanding. They are also the right tools for building a global civilization of peace and prosperity.
