Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is a FIRST - the first Black Woman Supreme Court Justice. And make no mistake, being a first is a monumental climb, and not one that ends when one reaches the mountain top.
I cringed, cried, and HOLLERED watching this magnificent Black woman be accosted with questions about what it means to be a woman or coercing her to denounce race education in schools and in American culture.
Nonetheless, the Earth shook yesterday when she was confirmed. Black women law students and lawyers, young women and girls of color, and men with empowered hearts and minds were given a moment to pause and acknowledge the rising up of this Black woman of justice.
May we take a moment, like we do when someone dies, to help bring forward a new day, a FIRST, and the dream of a truer democracy that Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson represents.
