David Barsamian will be speaking at First Unitarian Church/Sanctuary in Portland, Oregon on Friday, May 13th as a benefit for KBOO Community Radio (www.kboo.fm).  Founded in 1968, KBOO is one of the longest running independent, volunteer-run community radio stations in the country. All proceeds from this show will go to support KBOO Community Radio.

David Barsamian is one of America's most tireless and wide-ranging investigative journalists. He has altered the independent media landscape, both with his weekly radio show Alternative Radio - now in its 30th year - and his books with Noam Chomsky, Eqbal Ahmad, Howard Zinn, Tariq Ali, Richard Wolff, Arundhati Roy and Edward Said. His latest book of interviews with Noam Chomsky is Power Systems. His best-selling books with Chomsky have been translated into many languages. He lectures on world affairs, imperialism, capitalism, propaganda, the media, the economic crisis and global rebellions.

David will be speaking on one of the most critical issues we are facing, nothing short of saving the very planet that sustains us. Human beings and the natural world are on a collision course. Human activities inflict harsh and often irreversible damage on the environment and on critical resources. If not checked, many of our current practices put at serious risk the future that we wish for human society and the plant and animal kingdoms, and may so alter the living world that it will be unable to sustain life in the manner that we know. Fundamental changes are urgent if we are to avoid the collision our present course will bring about. Those words of warning were written in 1992 by some 1,700 scientists including more than 100 Nobel laureates. Here we are, more than two decades later still talking, still drilling and doing very little to protect our precious planet from an economic system that prioritizes profits over the well-being of Earth.

He is a winner of the Media Education Award, the ACLU's Upton Sinclair Award for independent journalism, and the Cultural Freedom Fellowship from the Lannan Foundation. The Institute for Alternative Journalism named him one of its Top Ten Media Heroes. He is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center. He has collaborated with the world-renowned Kronos Quartet  in events in New York, London, Vienna and elsewhere.

This month there are three important events occurring in Portland - David Barsamian, Amy Goodman, and Michael Meade are all coming to town. YAY! I plan to attend all three, and hope you will consider attending and/or passing this information on. This event with David Barsamian will be on May 13th at the First Unitarian Church on SW Main & 12th at 7pm. I last saw David Barsamian about 8 years ago, but have been listening for many years to his broadcast of Alternative Radio on NPR (before Big Money infected NPR and canned the show), and in recent years on KBOO. He has brought to my awareness a range of diverse voices and information for which I am profoundly grateful. When I speak of the critical importance of doing our research and discerning who to trust for our information and who is a true investigative journalist, etc., David Barsamian is among those truth-tellers with deep integrity. He provides us all with the opportunity to listen to and know what the corporate media works tirelessly to obscure and obstruct from our awareness. His is an enormous gift to our deeply needed individual and collective awakening. This event is also a fundraiser for KBOO community radio - a great cause to support!! My deep ongoing prayer is that more and more of us will be shaken awake and discover that courage is contagious! I hope to see some of you here! ~ Molly
