Marian Wright Edelman: HOW WE CAN TRULY HONOR DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

HOW WE CAN TRULY HONOR DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

Please go here for this powerful article by Marian Wright Edelman:  http://www.childrensdefense.org/newsroom/child-watch-columns/child-watch-documents/how-can-we-truly-honor-dr-king.html.

Marian Wright Edelman writes: "Let’s honor Dr. King by our committed action to end child poverty and close the morally obscene gulf between rich and poor in our nation where the 400 highest income earners made as much as the combined tax revenues of 22 state governments with 42 million citizens in 2008, and the wealthiest top 1 percent hold more net wealth than the bottom 90 percent combined. The rich don’t need another tax break and they need to give back some of their unfair share of our nation’s tax subsidies, loopholes and bailouts to feed and house and educate our children and employ their parents."

I have long loved, respected, and deeply appreciated Marian Wright Edelman. What a fiercely passionate advocate she is for the children - all the children! May we each emulate her courage, caring, truthtelling, and activism!  Amen!

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere... A true revolution of values will soon cause us to question the fairness and justice of many of our past and present policies. On the one hand, we are called to play the Good Samaritan on life's roadside, but that will be only an initial act. One day we must come to see that the whole Jericho Road must be transformed so that men and women will not be constantly beaten and robbed as they make their journey on life's highway. True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring. A true revolution of values will soon look uneasily on the glaring contrast of poverty and wealth.

 - Martin Luther King, Jr.
