‘Pity the Nation’: City Lights Books Displays Banners Warning Against Tyranny in San Francisco
![]() |
| City Lights Books in San Francisco this week unveiled banners quoting founder Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s poem “Pity the Nation,” echoing his call to resist authoritarianism. |
In San Francisco’s North Beach, where the Beat Generation once gave poetry a megaphone, a familiar voice has returned to the facade of City Lights Books.
The storied bookstore unfurled banners Tuesday, Oct. 21, quoting founder Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s “Pity the Nation,” a decades-old warning against tyranny that feels newly urgent amid reports that federal agents are being deployed to the Bay Area.
Pity the nation whose leaders are liars,
Whose sages are silenced and whose bigots haunt the airwaves.
Pity the nation that praises conquerors and acclaims the bully as hero.
Pity the people who allow their freedoms to erode and their rights to be washed away.
My country tears of thee. Sweet land of liberty!
Ferlinghetti co-founded City Lights in 1953, creating what would become a hub for the Beat Generation. His fearless defense of Allen Ginsberg’s “Howl” during the 1957 obscenity trial cemented the store’s role as a sanctuary for free expression — and for dissent.

He wrote “Pity the Nation” in 2007, near the end of George W. Bush’s presidency, as a lament for what he saw as America’s moral drift. The poem was inspired by Lebanese American poet Kahlil Gibran’s 1933 work of the same name, itself a meditation on a nation’s loss of virtue.
Ferlinghetti — a U.S. Navy veteran, pacifist and self-described “philosophical anarchist” — used poetry as a form of protest, confronting hypocrisy, bigotry and complacency. His words called out a nation that “praises conquerors,” fears outsiders and allows its freedoms to erode through apathy.
The banners remained visible off busy Columbus Street as the Trump administration began dispatching federal immigration agents to the Bay Area on Wednesday, Oct. 22, marking the start of a long-threatened crackdown that local officials have denounced as politically driven.
The move has rattled immigrant communities and drawn sharp rebukes from San Francisco leaders, who accused the president of using fear as a pretext for federal intervention.
For seven decades, City Lights has served as a gathering place for poets, thinkers and dissenters. More than three years after Ferlinghetti died in 2021 at age 101, his defiant spirit still lingers in the city he helped define.

EXCELLENT — Lawrence Ferlinghetti: Pity the Nation
This poem written by Lawrence Ferlinghetti in 2007 couldn't be more relevant to these times. A powerful and tragic illumination of what has never been more deeply true of America than today. This is why we rally and march, why we speak the truth and refuse to be silent, and why we grow in solidary and fierce loving actions on behalf of our nation and all nations and all beings.
We didn't slide into the nightmare of these fascist times overnight. And now we are all needed to do our part, whatever that is, to dismantle the brutal, dehumanizing, violent, criminal and sociopathic forces of hatred, greed, and delusion which seek to dismantle whatever threads we have left of democracy in America. We also act out of the deep awareness of knowing that that which imperils our nation also threatens all of life across our planet. I am heartened by how our numbers grow and grow! We are all connected, all family, all in this together! — Molly

The Most Glaring Evidence of the Extreme Mental Illness of the President of the United States: Trump Literally Takes A S**t On ‘No Kings’ Protesters In Wild AI Video
The videos in this post are very dark and disturbing. One of my sons first shared with me yesterday the AI generated one of the President literally shitting on No Kings protesters lining the streets from a fighter jet that he was piloting. This is off the charts mental illness. The pathology he embodies is relentlessly being directed in all different forms of payback and violence towards anyone and everyone who he experiences as being narcissistically injured by.
What my friend Glenn English said is also spot on: "Trump posting a deep fake video of him dumping shit on the US while wearing a crown was the most honest and accurate thing that he’s ever shared. When it comes to dumping shit all over the nation, he’s in a league of his own."
The danger of the President of our nation and all of his enablers in power cannot be overstated. We must expose the brutality and madness of this administration again and again and again. Now is not the time to be silent. Now is also not the time to return dehumanization with more of the same. May we stand strongly together in integrity, truth, justice, courage, and fierce love. — Molly
Trump took his taunting a step further with weird artificial intelligence videos that took a swipe at his opponents.By Jazmin Tolliver
President Donald Trump has taken his weird obsession with artificial intelligence to another disgusting height — this time in response to the millions of protesters who decried the Trump administration’s policies in No Kings rallies across the U.S. on Saturday.
In a late Saturday post, Trump shared a bizarre AI-generated video of himself wearing a crown and piloting a fighter jet with “King Trump” written on it. In the clip set to the tune of Kenny Loggins’ “Danger Zone,” a doctored Trump then dropped a whopping load of what appeared to be feces on protesters down below in the streets of Times Square in New York City.
In a separate post, an AI-generated Trump wearing a crown and robe pulls out a sword as the words “hail to the king” play in the background. A slew of his left-wing political foes, including former Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi then bow to him. The video was originally shared by Vice President JD Vance in a BlueSky post Saturday.
Trump took his taunting a step further on Saturday with a post from the White House that juxtaposed an image of Trump and Vance sporting crowns alongside a depiction of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer donning sombreros.
“We’re built different,” the White House captioned the post.
The White House didn’t immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment.
Meanwhile, many GOP leaders have labeled the protests as “Hate America” rallies while other Congressional republicans have blamed the protests for the ongoing government shutdown.
Millions of people attended the second round of more than 2,700 pro-democracy No Kings rallies across majority states on Saturday. The protests came as Trump’s decision to deploy National Guard troops and immigration agents to cities like Chicago and Washington, D.C., faced widespread backlash.
