Statement of Condemnation: Senator Tuberville’s Islamophobic and Anti-Muslim Hate Attack on Abdul El Sayed
Senator Tommy Tuberville’s claim that Michigan Democrats “voted to send a TERRORIST to the Senate” is not political criticism. It is bigotry, hate fear mongering speech dressed up as commentary, aimed at a man for one reason: he is Muslim.
Calling a Muslim United States candidate a terrorist and a radical Islamist who wants to “destroy America” is not a policy disagreement. It is the language of the Great Replacement theory, repackaged for a Senate seat. It tells voters that a Muslim American cannot be a patriot, cannot be trusted, and cannot hold power, because his faith itself is treated as evidence of an intent to destroy the country he was born and raised in. That is not rhetoric. That is a smear built on hate, and it puts real people in real danger.
This is inciting further hatred against Muslims and Muslim politicians. This is sickening. And it should never be normalized as ordinary political speech from a sitting United States senator.
I condemn this attack in the strongest terms. I call on Senator Tuberville to retract it. And I call on every elected official who has stayed silent to say, clearly and by name, that this is unacceptable.
If you are outraged by Senator Tommy Tuberville’s Islamophobic attack on Abdul El Sayed, please call and email his office today. Tell him this rhetoric is bigotry, anti-Muslim hate and racism, and demand he retract it and condemn the fear and hate it stirs up against Muslim Americans. His Washington DC office number is 202-224-4124. His Mobile, Alabama office number is 251-308-7233. Senator Tuberville does not list a direct public email address; constituents can reach him through the official contact form at tuberville.senate.gov/contact. Your call and your voice matter. Please make them heard.
