Respectfully, we’ve been saying this for years: you cannot understand ICE without understanding empire. The technologies of control, the systems of dehumanization, they flow back and forth across borders.
The ‘Homeland’ demands we respect its borders between “us” and “them,” between the “deserving” and the “disposable.” But defiance means crossing those lines and rejecting the privileges whiteness offers in exchange for complicity. Their power depends on our compliance.
From Minneapolis to Gaza, from torture camps in El Salvador to detention centers across this country: the connections are clear. We see them. We name them. And we must organize and rebel against them.
That’s my takeaway from Ta-Nehisi Coates’s new piece in Vanity Fair. Read it. As he writes: “The citizens of Minnesota have, as American taxpayers, subsidized an occupation overseas that is effectively a laboratory for their own.”
Let’s be clear, our money funds the occupation of Palestine. The surveillance tech gets tested there. Then it comes to Minneapolis and gets used against us here. Coates new piece here… https://www.vanityfair.com/news/story/tanehisi-coates-homeland-ice-minneapolis-trump
