Rumi: The Guest House

I have found the deep wisdom of this Rumi poem something that I return to again and again. Embodied here is the great teaching of how we come to hold ourselves and others with love and compassion, qualities essential to our healing and awakening and that of this beautiful hurting world we share.

In these times when so much is arising within us individually and collectively, may we stay open and not shut down or turn away. May we be curious, courageous, and kind, welcoming it all with compassion and tenderness. And may we reach out and connect heart to heart with our fellow sisters and brothers and remember to look for the potential gifts that might be found in even the darkest places. Bless us all. Molly

 The Guest House
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
 Jalaluddin Rumi
