Henry Giroux: Neoliberal Fascism In the United States

Neoliberal fascism produces a new kind of carnage in the United States. The current carnage is the endless escalating poverty and misery among large sections of the public coupled with relentless violence in the form of social isolation, an opioid crisis, mass shootings, the growing presence of the police in all public spheres, and a culture of fear that strengthens the security state and diminishes the welfare state. Atrocities have become so routine in the United States that they have become normalized. Even worse, they have resulted in collective numbing that collapses the line between a genuine moral crisis and the fog of ethical indifference. This is a violence that is as existential as it is visceral. There is nothing abstract about the subject of violence in the United States, especially under the leadership of a president who enables and legitimates it.
