The Face of Generosity and Human Caring

In the midst of it all, there is much goodness. There are beautiful human beings who are grounded in generosity, kindness, compassion, courage, and commitment to doing their part in working towards a more just, equitable, and caring world. Hamdi Ulukaya is certainly among them. Deep bow of respect and gratitude.

And, all this said, it is also true that no child should be at risk of going hungry. But the truth is that millions of children in America live with daily food insecurity. Therefore, this is also a story of the vital need to dismantle our nation's patriarchal predatory neoliberal capitalist system. Until this happens, we will not be able to call ourselves a just, equitable, and caring nation. Molly

This is Hamdi Ulukaya, a Kurdish businessman who emigrated to the US in 1994. He is the founder and CEO of Chobani Greek Yogurt and has grown his fortune to $1.7 billion.
This week he heard about the Warwick, Rhode Island public school district that decided to start offering only sunflower butter and jelly sandwiches to students who owed lunch money (any amount; I heard of parents getting bills for 5¢). Since he is logical, he realized that that was stupid and out of control and has offered to pay off the entire debt so these children can have a hot meal. For many students, that will be their only hot meal for the day.
Ulukaya also gave 10% of Chobani shares to his employees in 2016. This is a good man. And, for dramatic effect, I’ll re-emphasize that he’s an immigrant. And a Muslim.
