I wrote this out of deep frustration and anger with parts of the vice presidential debate tonight and how it was that the most important issues and greatest imperatives of our time are allowed to be demonized. This is insanity! It is insane to not insist on the truth — that radical changes are needed NOW to save millions of lives in our nation and billions worldwide.
This is my response to anyone who says that we have to hold back and be realistic in what we unapologetically, openly, and fiercely fight for today — like ending fracking NOW, like implementing an aggressive comprehensive Green New Deal NOW, like demanding Medicare For All NOW, and on and on — because it’s not the “right” time.
Meanwhile millions are sickening, starving, dying. The truth is that we’ve waited so long — colluding with the status quo and incrementalism and neoliberal predatory capitalism — that now we’re all swept up in a horrifying death spiral which puts life on Earth at risk of extinction.
I choose instead to stand strongly and loudly and fiercely with Satish Kumar. I know that the lives of our grandchildren — ages 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 — and all the children of all the species everywhere depend on the refusal to be a realist, an incrementalist, a colluder with what we’re indoctrinated into believing is impossible.
Because, truly, what have the realists done for us?? — Molly

"Look at what realists have done for us. They have led us to war and climate change, poverty on an unimaginable scale, and wholesale ecological destruction. Half of humanity goes to bed hungry because of all the realistic leaders in the world. I tell people who call me 'unrealistic' to show me what their realism has done. Realism is an outdated, overplayed and wholly exaggerated concept." — Satish Kumar
