The Compassionate and Loving Wisdom of Jeff Foster

The miracle is not to walk on water. The miracle
is to walk on this earth."  Thích Nhất Hạnh

Oh, sweet little boy, beloved little girl, you are so overwhelmed by life sometimes, I know, by the enormity of it all, by the vastness of the possibilities, by the myriad of perspectives available to you. You feel so pressed down sometimes, by all the unresolved questions, by all the information you are supposed to process and hold, by the urgency of things. You are overcome by powerful emotions, trying to make it all "work out" somehow, trying to get everything done "on time," trying to resolve things so fast, even trying not to try at all.

You are exhausted, sweet one, exhausted from all the trying and the not trying, and you are struggling to trust life again. It's all too much for the poor organism, isn't it? You are exhausted; you long to rest. And that is not a failing of yours, not a horrible mistake, but something wonderful to embrace!

What you really long for is a deep intimacy with your own experience – the deepest acceptance of every thought, every sensation, every feeling. And that cannot come from outside of yourself.

For so long there had been a deadness. For so long I’d sat back and watched the world go by without me. The world had become the enemy, because it wasn’t essentially real.

Life will eventually bring you to your knees. Either you’ll be on your knees cursing the universe and begging for a different life, or you’ll be brought to your knees by gratitude and awe, deeply embracing the life that you have, too overwhelmed by the beauty of it all to stand or even speak. Either way, they’re the same knees.

Let life kick you off your pedestal time and time again, until you lose all interest in being on pedestals.

The word “depressed” is spoken phonetically as “deep rest”. We can view depression not as a mental illness, but on a deeper level, as a profound, and very misunderstood, state of deep rest, entered into when we are completely exhausted by the weight of our own identity.

Stop thinking your way through life, always trying to work it out before living it. Life is to be lived, not analyzed to death. Feel.

Learn to hold your own feelings like beloved children, however intensely they burn and scream for attention. Celebrate the aliveness in your hurt, the vibrancy of your disappointment, the electricity of your sadness. Kneel before the power in your anger; honor its fiery creativity. From this place of deep acceptance, you do not become weak and passive. Quite the opposite. You simply enter the world from a place of non-violence, and therefore immense creative power, and you are open to the possibility of deep listening, honest dialogue, and unexpected change. In suffering, you become small. In love, anything is possible.

Stop trying to heal yourself, fix yourself, even awaken yourself. Let go of letting go. Stop trying to fast-forward the movie of your life, chasing futures that never seem to arrive. Instead, bow deeply to yourself as you actually are. Your pain, your sorrow, your doubts, your deepest longing, your fearful thoughts... are not mistakes, and they aren’t asking to be healing. They are asking to be held. Here, now, lightly, in the loving arms of present awareness.

Oh yes, for sure, there will be heartbreak! And you will learn to get out of your head and into your immediate embodied experience, coming out of mental stories and conclusions, and contacting the raw energy of the here and now, directly feeling the devastation of your dreams rather than intellectualizing everything away, letting the grief, anger, and sorrow of millennia surge through your pores, rather than dismissing it all as an “illusion,” or distracting yourself with fresh dreams.

Feelings that have been pushed away do not actually disappear; they live on in the darkness of the Unconscious, pulling the strings in our relationships, our work, self-expression, causing us to become reactive, compulsive, obsessive, depressed, anxious, and deteriorate our physical health until one day, we remember, all feelings have a right to exist in us. So, we stop numbing ourselves, and feed them love, attention, curiosity and Presence. Now, they can finally come to rest.

It’s delicious, ingenious, perfect, intelligent that you never felt like you fit in. It means that you were always alive, and therefore unique and irreplaceable, designed to resist any kind of labeling whatsoever, unable to be pinned down or reduced to a category.

If somebody treats you with unkindness, if they judge or criticize you, it’s likely they have endured similar treatment from others in the past, and they are only repeating unconscious patterns in search of a love they cannot find.

And how easy this mechanism is to see in others! Can we see it in ourselves? That is the question. Who are your scapegoats? What do you reject in others that you secretly reject in yourself? Weakness? Failure? Fear? Homosexuality? Violence? What thoughts and feelings do you not admit in yourself, in order to hold up to the world an image of who you are?

Trust the unpredictable intelligence of healing, and know that their “symptoms” may get worse before they get better; energy may become more intense before it dies down. What appears now as chaos and disintegration may in fact be a necessary release and an intelligent reorganization of blocked systems.

Admit is a beautiful word – it means both “tell the truth” and “allow in.” To admit present experience – to tell the truth about what is actually present – is to recognize that what’s present has already been admitted into life. The waves appearing at present have already been admitted into the ocean, and admitting that they exist is at the absolute core of this teaching. Waking up is all about admitting who you really are!

Don’t try to trust; simply trust that you cannot trust right now or don’t know how. Don’t force gratitude; just be grateful that you aren’t grateful, love that the demand for gratitude is unnecessary. Love your inability to love fully, accept your non-acceptance, surrender to your absolute failure to surrender today. This is freedom, right where you are—the freedom to feel unfree, to taste life totally at the point of creation, to be exactly what you are, no matter what you are. Whatever arises, however unwanted, however disappointing, however ephemeral, say, “You are none other than life itself! I bow to you!”

You are a complete mess, friend, unable to be mended. The time for solutions has passed. Yet stay close. Breathe. This is not the end. Come out of all your futures; no time for futures now. Look: you are an embraceable mess. A mess that is holy to its very core. You could never be what they wanted you to be. You were always too alive, too inquisitive, born with a heart broken open to life. They tried to close it, but it would never close. You wouldn’t fit in. You couldn’t conform. You could never squeeze yourself into their ideal of “perfection.” The perfect thoughts and feelings, the “right” way to be, the dance they told you to dance—your heart was always too big. Let everything flood in now. Give up. Fall apart. Break down. Let the old dreams of yourself die a beautiful death. Let all the lost fragments find safety in your loving arms. And in your falling, find yourself. And in your breaking, breathe. And all the creatures in all the forgotten Kingdoms are bowing to you now. Their savior. Their love.

To allow our hearts to break, to soften them, to sink deeply into the knowing that everything will fall, everything will pass, everything will crumble, can be the great portal to awakening. We simply stop taking everything for granted. We stop living in “tomorrow” and turn toward the living day. We stop seeking our happiness in the future, clinging to the promises of others, and begin to break open into a bigger happiness that is rooted in presence, and truth, that allows for the coming but also the going of things, that accepts the little deaths as they happen each day, the disappointments, the losses, the shattered expectations, the good-byes. The Unexpected becomes our friend, a constant companion. We break open into bitter-sweetness, into fragility and utter vulnerability, into the gift of every moment, of every encounter with a friend, a lover, a stranger.

Your pain, your sorrow, your desperate seeking, it is energy, only energy. Sometimes gentle, sometimes fierce, sometimes even volcanic, but energy nonetheless. Strip away the secondhand words and concepts—fear, anger, depression, loneliness—and contact what is wordlessly alive in your body, not yesterday, not tomorrow, but now. Feel “sadness” before it is named. Feel the tightness in the chest, the tension in the throat. Feel “anger” before it is defined. Feel the burning in the belly, the pounding of the passionate heart. Feel the throb and pull of life, the vibration of it. Make space for all bodily sensations, the raw energy, the power, the electricity, the sound and the fury. It is life, only life, always life. Don’t judge the energy, or try to push it away, or ignore it, because then you split yourself into “good me” and “bad me,” “sick me” and “healthy me,” “spiritual me” and “ignorant me,” and the war begins. Go beyond the entire “me” story, and honor what is alive in your body, here and now, even if what is alive is intense, uncomfortable, or simply too unfamiliar to be named. Let the intensity of bodily sensation focus you. Let attention drop into the moment. Non-resistance to life, the absolute surrender to the living moment, no matter how much the moment deviates from our “perfect” image—this is the beginning of true healing. Divorce the dream and marry reality.

Gentleness is the only answer.

EXCELLENT — Jeff Foster: Who Are You Without Your Spiritual Story?

This deeply wise and moving poem was shared with our spiritual community this morning in the dharma talk given by today's guest speaker at PIMC (https://www.portlandinsight.org/), Enrique Collazo. So rich and something which deeply speaks to me. The entirety of Enrique's experience, wisdom, and sharing with our Sangha was filled with a compassion that excludes no one. There was a depth of holding of our human suffering and our strengths, beauty, and love that was incredibly nourishing, and even more so in these times, and for which I am deeply grateful. 🙏💗 Molly

Who Are You Without Your Spiritual Story?

Please, don't talk to me about 'Pure Awareness' or 'Dwelling in the Absolute'.
I want to see how you treat your partner,
your kids, your parents, your precious body.

Please, don't lecture me about 'the illusion of the separate self' or how you achieved permanent bliss in just 7 days.
I want to feel a genuine warmth radiating from your heart.
I want to hear how well you listen,
take in information that doesn't fit your personal philosophy.
I want to see how you deal with people who disagree with you.

Don't tell me how awakened you are, how free you are from ego.
I want to know you beneath the words.
I want to know what you're like when troubles befall you.
If you can fully allow your pain and not pretend to be invulnerable.
If you can feel your anger yet not step into violence.
If you can grant safe passage to your sorrow yet not be its slave.
If you can feel your shame and not shame others:
If you can fuck up, and admit it.
If you can say 'sorry', and really mean it.
If you can be fully human in your glorious divinity.

Don't talk to me about your spirituality, friend.
I'm really not that interested.

I only want to meet YOU.
Know your precious heart.
Know the beautiful human struggling for the light.

Before 'the spiritual one'.
Before all the clever words.

We Need To Celebrate the Small Wins. This Is Going To Be a Marathon, Not a Sprint

Something shared by one of my activist friends whose immigration status puts them at risk

"With genuine love:
I am a curmudgeon-y Leftist. Years of working on immigration issues got me here. And you best believe that in the current atmosphere, I am filled with anger and bitterness at what could have been.
But people need to ease up on these critiques of the marches and rallies we are seeing. OBVIOUSLY many of those marches don't speak sufficiently to many of the issues I care about. Would I love it if the messaging was better? Absolutely. Do I have concerns that they will only result in people being shepherded into a Democratic Party that continues to show that it is not up to the task of resisting this fascism? Yes.
But these rallies are more about getting people engaged, many of whom have never or seldom attended political protests. They are going to pool together people with lots of different positionalities, stances, politics, etc...With sizes like this, it is literally inevitable.
This is also organizing 101: Even at the most local level, whenever you put together a campaign, you end up working with people whose politics you don't like. I have been shocked at the politics of people I have temporarily allied with in the past. That continues to happen. It's just a fact of activism.
But one of the things needed right now is a show of size and strength. We cannot gather huge crowds if we start to police the politics of every rally. And even better, beyond the stated goals of a lot of these marches, they DO include a lot of people speaking to issues like Palestine and Dem complicity in the immigration crisis (for example)....I've been impressed with some of the signs I've seen.
Finally: they are working. Trump is considerably down in the polls. This is not just about these marches, but they have helped people see that the idea that Trump had a "mandate" is BS. All this helps with broader organizing, beyond the scope of these mass gatherings.
We need to celebrate the small wins. This is going to be a marathon, not a sprint."

My husband and I at one of many recent protests in Portland

My response to their message....

Thank you. As always, I appreciate you. You articulate so much so often so well.

And maybe it’s different here in the Pacific Northwest, but countless times I see people here with signs and songs and shouts for Palestine, for immigrants, and calling out the infuriating complicity of the neoliberal democrats with the fascist regime in power today.

And any injustice is connected with every other injustice, atrocity, brutality, dehumanization, and the many faces of violence. It’s just all connected. It is my belief  that whatever brings us together in ever growing solidarity builds on itself and is part of the new world that is trying to birth itself.

I post many images and videos from every protest that I participate in. Deeply energizing, inspiring, passionate, and caring. More and more people are waking up and caring and beginning to take action.

And, wow, that just happened Thursday near our home in Vancouver, Washington. My husband and I were going to a town hall with Representative Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, whose alliance with the fascists has been infuriating. We were getting closer to the venue at 4:40 for the 5:00 town hall when we saw cars lining up in the road and people walking from blocks away — and 500 people showed up! In little Vancouver! Wow! We had no idea that we’d be going to a full blown rally as the overflow crowd that couldn’t get in surrounded the glass windows on both sides of the building where Gluesenkamp Perez was trying to speak with signs and shouts and condemnation of this person we’d voted for who ended up often voting like her fascist opponent Joe Kent. And hundreds of people were mad as hell and calling her out inside and outside. It was all over the news. And the chances are strong now that a true progressive will run against her in the next election.

More and more people are rising up! And I am profoundly grateful for whatever inspires anyone to engage and act on behalf of a higher good for us all. — Molly

A Personal Story of Blessings and Heartache

Sitting with one of my Afghan friends, a lovely mother and grandmother

Recently my husband I experienced a day that was very special on so many levels. Ron and I began the morning with first celebrating our amazing grandson Carsten’s 9th birthday. Afterwards we headed to the Columbia River with our golden retriever Shira, something we usually do every two to four days. But this time we were met with a big surprise.

I love the mystery and synchronicity and grace that brought us together on this Sunday afternoon with some of our Afghan friends who we’ve been missing and hadn’t seen in some time. But here they were having a large gathering at the park that included several families and multiple generations. We were so happy to see each other! And even though they'd left their husbands at home and it was just women and children, they love Ron and he was also happily welcomed into this wonderful gathering.

And then the rain rolled in. Yes, there was a covered area that our friends and their friends could all move to and share with the even larger gathering of other people who were celebrating Easter. That said, we also understood how they were hoping to have their own space to barbecue and enjoy this special time together.

So my husband and I jumped in our car, drove the 15 minutes to our home and dropped Shira off, and then turned around with Ron’s truck loaded with 2 canopies and rugs and chairs. And we all just had the most wonderful time together with our friends and making new friends!

Ron and I first met out Afghan and Syrian friends over 3 years ago when we were volunteering to help settle our new refugee neighbors. We loved the experience and the relationships we cultivated with several families. The bond that Ron and I feel with these dear friends is simply always there. It is hard to explain what a gift it is to share these beautiful heartfelt friendships.

And seeing each other is also both joyful and bittersweet. I love our Afghan and Syrian friends. And I know that they also face risks because of their refugee status — and this is true even though they are taking every legal step required of them in their immigration process. Never have the threats to immigrants been greater than with the current administration’s profoundly cruel, unjust, immoral, inhumane, and criminal policies towards immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers.

My heart has already been breaking with all of the daily trauma, injustice, heartlessness, cruelty, and dehumanization being perpetrated on so many by the current administration something which stretches back in time through other administrations and is now being escalated to a horrifying extent. And now with being acutely aware that there are people who I know and love and care about so deeply who are among those at risk just infuriates me even more!

My heart aches with the horror of it all. Our numbers must grow of those of us who are standing up in protection of everyone who is being targeted. We must somehow stop this madness!

Bless us all, no exceptions,
— Molly

Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer: The Third Option

The Third Option

We have two options only: bow or break.
— Maria Popova, The Marginalian

I am learning there is a third option: bathe.
—Winifred Nimrod, The Metta Newsletter, April 21, 2025

When Wini tells me the third option is bathe,
my whole body relaxes, as if I’ve just slipped
into the warm tub of the moment and now I am steeping
in the truth of the middle way, submerging myself
in the liminal waters of how it is we live between extremes.
I’ve always wondered how we get clean—
sure, we scrub away at whatever stories we’ve told ourselves,
but then we sit and stew in our own debris.
Still, when Wini said “bathe,” I felt how the word
took my mind out of its deep twin channels and invited
a plunge into something new—that place where
I might soak in the world as it is, full body, part broken,
part bow, soap mingling with grime,
my fingers starting to wrinkle as I slide deeper in.

Revolution

After the political rally, standing on the corner
was the man in the pink flamingo onesie
and the handlebar mustache playing ukelele,
singing “This Land Was Made for You And Me,”
surrounded by folks still carrying their signs
for Peace, Diversity and Equality, and though
no one was listening, though there were no news trucks,
no microphones, no megaphones, and no way
any politician would hear their voices or see their signs,
there they were, singing and showing up despite,
and this was the moment that made me believe
in the path—not just the grand marches toward freedom,
but also the thin trails marked with courage and creativity,
small moments I can follow like bread crumbs
till this country again feels like home.

 Courage

When the light around you lessens
And your thoughts darken until
Your body feels fear turn
Cold as a stone inside,

When you find yourself bereft
Of any belief in yourself
And all you unknowingly
Leaned on has fallen,

When one voice commands
Your whole heart
And it is raven dark,

Steady  yourself and see
That it is your own thinking
That darkens your world,

Search and you will find
A diamond-thought of light,

Know that you are not alone
And that this darkness has purpose;
Gradually it will school your eyes
To find the one gift your life requires
Hidden within this night-corner.

Invoke the learning
Of every suffering
You have suffered.

Close your eyes
Gather all the kindling
About your heart
To create one spark.
That is all you need
To nourish the flame
That will cleanse the dark
Of its weight of festered fear.

A new confidence will come alive
To urge you toward higher ground
Where your imagination
Will learn to engage difficulty
As its most rewarding threshold!

Destiny

you will break a little beneath the press of her hand on
your chest. you won't even know it's happening, for she
is quiet and works in secret. she will reach her fingers
between your bones and excavate your heart from beneath
its rib cage. she will study it, test its weight, its poverty.
she will then set it out into the wild world. there, it will
be starved and ached, but also nourished and held. all
the while, she is watching. and one day she will pull your
weathered heart back into its chest. lay it in its place and
bless it, for all that it endured and carried. she can smell
the kind of love it has now found, a love that will keep the
heart strong, blood red, alive. now, her work is done and
she must leave. for there are so many hearts still starving
to find their home. there is so much love still seeking love.
this is her hidden work.

'We Need Urgent Global Action': Study Warns Humanity on Path to Trigger 16 Climate Tipping Points

"It is clear that we are currently on a dangerous trajectory," said one University of Exeter professor.

By essica Corbett

Scientists on Wednesday released yet another study warning that humankind is at risk of triggering various climate "tipping points" absent urgent action to dramatically reduce planet-heating emissions from fossil fuels.

The new peer-reviewed paper, published Wednesday in the journal Earth System Dynamics, comes from a trio of experts at the United Kingdom's University of Exeter and the University of Hamburg in Germany.

Climate scholars use the term "tipping point" to describe a critical threshold which, when crossed, "leads to significant and long-term changes of the system," the paper notes. Debate over it "has intensified over the past two decades," prompting several studies of specific risks.

"Climate tipping points could have devastating consequences for humanity," said co-author Tim Lenton in a statement. "It is clear that we are currently on a dangerous trajectory—with tipping points likely to be triggered unless we change course rapidly."

"We need urgent global action—including the triggering of 'positive tipping points' in our societies and economies—to reach a safe and sustainable future," added the Exeter professor and Global Systems Institute director.

Lenton's team calculated the probabilities of triggering 16 tipping points. They looked at the risks of serious damage to key glaciers, ice sheets, sea ice, and permafrost; the dieback of forests such as the Amazon; the die-off of low-latitute coral reefs; and the collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), which is part of a crucial "global conveyor belt" of ocean currents.

To assess the risk of current policies triggering climate tipping points, the researchers focused on a scenario in which median warming of 2.8°C takes place by the end of the century.

On that pathway, the study says, "our most conservative estimate of triggering probabilities averaged over all tipping points is 62%... and nine tipping points have a more than 50% probability of getting triggered."

Under scenarios with lower temperature rise, "the risk of triggering climate tipping points is reduced significantly," the study continues. "However, it also remains less constrained since the behaviour of climate tipping points in the case of a temperature overshoot is still highly uncertain."

The paper concludes that "rapid action is needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, since climate tipping points are already close, and it will be decided within the coming decades if they will be crossed or not."

Lead author Jakob Deutloff shared that takeaway a bit more optimistically, saying that "the good news from our study is that the power to prevent climate tipping points is still in our hands."

"By moving towards a more sustainable future with lower emissions, the risk of triggering these tipping points is significantly reduced," he added. "And it appears that breaching tipping points within the Amazon and the permafrost region should not necessarily trigger others."

The paper was published during Covering Climate Now's joint week of media coverage drawing attention to the 89% of people worldwide who want their governments to do more to address the global crisis; ahead of a Global Systems Institute conference on tipping points this summer; and just over six months away from the next United Nations climate summit, COP30, in Brazil.

While some governments are trying to prevent the worst-case scenario by taking action to cut emissions, U.S. President Donald Trump has made clear since returning to office in January that he aims to deliver on his pro-fossil fuel campaign pledge to "drill, baby, drill."

On the heels of the hottest year in human history, Trump is working to gut key agencies, ditched the Paris climate agreement, and has taken executive action to boost planet-wrecking coal, gas, and oil, including declaring a national energy emergency.

Fossil Fuels Blamed as 84% of World's Coral Reefs Hit by Worst Bleaching Event Ever Recorded

This underwater photo taken on June 15, 2024 shows divers amongst bleached corals around Koh Tao island in the southern Thai province of Surat Thani. (Photo: Lillian Suwanrumpha/AFP via Getty Images)
"The magnitude and extent of the heat stress is shocking," said one marine scientist.

By Julia Conley

A year after scientists warned the world was seeing its fourth mass coral bleaching event, rising ocean temperatures fueled by greenhouse gas emissions have now devastated 84% of Earth's coral reefs—with likely knock-on effects for about a third of all marine species and 1 billion people whose lives and livelihoods are directly impacted by the health of the "rainforests of the sea."

Coral Reef Watch at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released its latest data on Wednesday, showing the current bleaching event has become the most widespread on record, impacting reefs from the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic and Pacific.

The news comes three months after scientists confirmed 2024 was the hottest year on record. Last year, meteorologists also found that sea surface temperatures in the North Atlantic were about 2°F higher than the 1990-2020 average and nearly 3°F above the average in the 1980s.

Unusually warm ocean waters cause corals to expel algae that give the reefs their bright color and deliver nutrients, supporting the immense biodiversity that is normally found within the reefs. Prolonged bleaching can kill coral reefs.

"The magnitude and extent of the heat stress is shocking," marine scientist Melanie McField, the founder of the Healthy Reefs for Healthy People initiative in the Caribbean, told Reuters. "Some reefs that had thus far escaped major heat stress and we thought to be somewhat resilient, succumbed to partial mortalities in 2024."

Derek Manzello, director of Coral Reef Watch, told The Guardian that some reefs that had been considered safe from the impact of rising ocean temperatures have now been bleached.

"Some reefs that had thus far escaped major heat stress and we thought to be somewhat resilient, succumbed to partial mortalities in 2024."

“The fact that so many reef areas have been impacted," he said, "suggests that ocean warming has reached a level where there is no longer any safe harbor from coral bleaching and its ramifications."

The current coral bleaching event began in January 2023. That same year, scientists were alarmed by an ocean heatwave off the coast of Florida that rapidly bleached the continental United States' only living barrier reef.

That event prompted NOAA to introduce a new coral bleaching alert scale from Level 1—significant bleaching—to Level 5, at which point a reef is approaching mortality.

Another ocean heatwave last year threatened Australia's Great Barrier Reef, eight years after nearly half of the coral in some northern parts of the 1,400-mile reef was killed by a mass bleaching event.

But recent major bleaching events affecting specific reefs have not compared to the current widespread devastation in the world's oceans.

“Reefs have not encountered this before," said Britta Schaffelke, coordinator of the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network, told The Guardian. "With the ongoing bleaching it's almost overwhelming the capacity of people to do the monitoring they need to do. The fact that this most recent, global-scale coral bleaching event is still ongoing takes the world's reefs into uncharted waters."

The other three mass bleaching events on record occurred from 2014-17, with 68% of the world's reefs affected; in 2010, when 37% were impacted; and in 1998, when 21% suffered bleaching.

The report from Coral Reef Watch followed the Trump administration's under-the-radar release of climate change data that minimized NOAA's findings about the level of planet-heating carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere. President Donald Trump also issued an executive order demanding sunset provisions for every existing energy regulation and notified companies that they can seek exemptions to clean air regulations.

Joerg Wiedenmann, a marine biologist at the Coral Reef Laboratory at the University of Southampton in England, emphasized that taking action to stop the heating of the world's oceans could protect coral reefs, the marine species they provide habitats to, and the communities they support by protecting coastlines and providing fishing and tourism jobs.

"If we manage to decrease ocean warming," Wiedenmann toldThe Washington Post, "there is always a chance for corals to recover."
