Henry Giroux: Politics As Bad Faith

I will always be eternally grateful for the wisdom,
integrity, courage, and truth-telling of Henry Giroux,
so deeply needed in these dark times. — Molly

POLITICS AS BAD FAITH

The growing commentary by conservatives and liberals about the fear of fascism under Trump is difficult to read given how much these very people set the stage for him.

More than indifferent and morally lax, they were complicit by producing and supporting policies that wrecked the lives of millions at home and abroad. They are the hidden vultures of predatory capitalism. They turned their backs on the poor, said close to nothing about the growing police violence, underplayed the toxic racism in the country, refused to condemn the take over of the government by the financial elite, turned their backs on civic education and the need to provide massive financial support for students and public and higher education.

At the same time, they completely ignored the massive growth of inequality in wealth and power that furthered the suffering of the working class while preaching a toxic and depoliticizing individualism all the while subscribing to the notion that there was no alternative to neoliberalism.

And they are surprised that we are in the midst of fascist politics? Really!

The call to get money out of politics is a band aid solution and says nothing about the need to acknowledge that while we have capitalism we will never have democracy. I agree with David Harvey who argues that the economic, racial, social, ecological, and political problems the U.S. and the world face are much too deep to address without a "very strong anti-capitalist movement."
